Calligraphy v/s Typography v/s Hand Lettering

Sudeep Gandhi, professional calligraphist, takes us through the difference in his 'Hairline' series.

The intricate lettering that skilled artists are able to create by hand is absolutely mesmerising. And the nuance around the different styles is almost as detailed as the art itself. Thankfully, we’ve got some professional help to wrap our heads around it.

Hairline is a series commissioned by IndieFolio to professional calligraphist, Sudeep Gandhi. Sudeep wanted to explain the difference between Calligraphy, Typography, and Hand Letting through a visual format.

Understanding the difference

Calligraphy – You will notice thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes created with a dip pen with a nib and ink.

Hand Letting – Referred as “faux calligraphy,” it uses the same principles of thick downstrokes and light upstrokes, but is written with a pen of some kind rather than a nib and ink.

Typography – It’s main characteristic is that every letter retains it’s shape and looks the same. It is what you see on your screen currently.
