Sachin Sanghe is an engineer by profession. Born in Bengaluru’s Mudugari area, he is just like any other engineer barring one thing. His talent for creating micro-sculptures. Sachin Sanghe is one of the top artists in the nation at what he does. He carves stunning sculptures out of the most unexpected objects. His preferred mediums for carving these teeny tiny masterpieces are chalk and the lead in pencils.
I was interested in sketching and painting right from my school days. I also developed a fascination for chalks while I was still in school, and loved it more than pen and paper. Soon I began carving on chalks. I use dividers, dissection needles, compass and safety pins for carving. In the beginning I used to carve names and gift it to my friends, but never took it seriously. It was only after I joined college that I started experimenting, and moved to pencils etc.
A self-confessed fan on Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachchan, his amazing work allowed him to get in touch with and gift them his work. Sachin has carved more that 100 different micro-sculptures over the past few years.
What started for Sachin Sanghe as a ‘hobby’ has now grown into an undying passion to carve the most intricate figures he can imagine. A regular sculpture takes him around 8 hours to complete but there are a few works for which he likes to devote his time so that he can perfectly carve out the intricacies of his subjects and bring out the realism in his works. A normal ‘piece’ he says would normally take him 6-8 hours, but there are some that take a lot of time.
I carved the Taj Mahal on chalk once, and it took more than 80 hours to complete.
I have always admired Gandhiji for the kind of life he lived. His beliefs and principles are the strengths of India and will be forever. I hope my love for him is seen in the carvings.
