Wacom and IndieFolio both encourage art and creativity. We want people to feel free to create but everyone needs a little incentive every now and then. Also, who doesn’t like a little healthy competition?
And that was it, from there Brushstroke Battles was born with the theme of ‘Colour’. We had more than 500 entries submitted from all over India. Suffice to say, the judges needed a fair amount of time to pick a winner. But before we announce whose entries were selected, let us tell about the judges themselves.
Sajid Wajid Shaikh
Sajid is originally from New Bombay. His creative adventure began at age 7 when his mom gave him a box full of paint. Ever since, it has been one canvas, silkscreen, notebook page, paper, and poster print after another. A self-taught visual artist specializing in illustration and design, he uses a visual language of shape, form, colour and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. It’s a form of self-expression, meta and cathartic. His work indicates a departure from reality in his depiction of imagery in art. This departure from accurate representation can be slight, partial, or complete. He has worked for firms like Umbrella Design and Contract Advertising. On clients which include Google, Yahoo, Adidas, Redbull, Elle to name a few.
His appetite for collaboration and creation is endless. His curiosity and creative aspirations are infinite.
Lavanya Naidu
An animator, illustrator and a graduate from National Institute of Design. Having also attended summer school at Gobelins l’Ecole de l’Image, Paris, she’s worked with Google, Ted X, Cartoon Network and more. Her illustrations are charming, cute and will leave you with a warm feeling. She enjoys freelancing because of all the variety she encounters.
You might occasionally find her playing her ukelele or trying very hard to pick up a new language.
Mukesh Singh
Mukesh Singh has been working as an illustrator, motion graphics artist, senior game artist, CG modeller and animator, and senior illustrator and concept artist for various comics, game, and film and television projects. Singh’s comics work began with Virgin Comics. He was selected by Marvel comics to design an armour set for Indestructible Hulk. He has made various covers for Marvel comics.

To win the next one, you may want to keep this advice from our judge, Sajid Wajid Shaikh in mind:
We expect originality. We don’t want to see pop culture referenced in the art. A winner is process-oriented and we want to see that process. We look for who takes it to the next level and shows us the sketch, the colour blocking, the light and shadowplay. There are others who had good images but they didn’t win because they didn’t tell a story or didn’t present their work aesthetically enough. Photographs of printouts or mockups are appreciated in submissions because they add those extra levels of presentation to your work. It’s not just about the art, it’s about the theme, your insight regarding the theme and the way you display it.
