Passion, Logic and The Green Stuff: MasterClass with Sharon Borgoyary

Sharon Borgoyary is a woman of passion and logic. The green stuff will come later. She believes that it was her following her passion that brought her to where she is in life and it is her passion that will take her even further.

The beginning

First, we need to go back in time to when she started out. As a child, whenever asked about what she wanted to do when she grew up, she would always say that she wanted to paint and draw. However, she realised that passions change with time and with success. Passion, to her, became more about happiness. If she could fulfil her passion, she was happy.

Her Mondays used to be depressing. She would go into her office and find memes to post about hating Mondays.

After a while, this got to her and it prompted her to make a change. She decided to get back into fulfilling a passion project.

The kick-off

Kunel Gaur, the co-founder of Animal, had approached her back then with the idea of creating a deck of 54 cards made by  54 artists. The idea seemed intriguing and she began to rediscover what it was like to work with passion. After a rousing success, she learned that passion is the only way to go in life.

Another passion project that she showcased was of the many versions of the animal logo. This project came together quite organically with a ton of artists getting involved and throwing in their own versions of the logo.

The success

After she joined Animal full-time and began to work for a few brands, the bigger brands started rolling in.

From Housing.

Housing.com had approached them to create a whole new visual language. They did and they loved it. It wasn’t long until they were approached by one of the biggest brands in fitness in the world: Adidas. Adidas has asked them to work on a number of projects and they delivered on all. She said Adidas gives them the best briefs.

In 2016, they came up with the idea of Indianama, 69 pieces of art by 69 artists to celebrate 69 years of Indian independence.

This year, they are trying it again but with cinemagraphs of India. They have a set of themes that artists can apply for over here.

The Green Stuff

The Green Stuff refers to money. Everybody wants it but it’s only going to come with a lot of hard work and a lot of love for your passion. Without focusing on your passion in a logical way, don’t expect the green stuff to come to you. Money should be the last thought in your head as it is a by-product of excellence created from passion.

The Workshop

After she finished speaking, everyone was given a pen and paper. They were told to write their name and their passion. Then they had to state their passion and create a poster for their passion. The audience could use any art style and any elements they wanted to use.

Some members of the audience also took the time to ask questions.

One of the questions was about creative options: How many are enough when pitching?

Sharon says that she gives two because any more options than that and it leads to confusion with clients and yourself. Maybe if you have to push it, 3 is the maximum number of options that should be given. However, it’s all about thinking your ideas through completely and getting a client to buy into it.

We, of course, love all the work from Animal and would be sold on anything they offered us. But speaking of good offerings, Wacom, being the sponsor of this event, offered their fantastic tablets for people to design on.

If you think that your work would be so much better if you had a Wacom then you’re in luck. We have a contest where you can win a Wacom tablet, click the picture and get all the details.

If you’re in Mumbai on the 22nd of August, we’d love to see you at our next MasterClass. Click the picture below to register for the event.
