In The Spotlight: Kriti Garg

Kalakaar ki pehchan kaam se hoti hai naam se nahi.

Meet the latest BananaBandy artist under the spotlight, Kriti Garg!

The talented artist specialising in fine arts is currently pursuing her second year of Liberal Arts education at Ashoka University. Though she specialises in sketching, the route that has led her where she is today hasn’t been so straightforward. As a child, Kriti tried several different fields from dancing to playing musical instruments but nothing really stuck to her, that is, till she discovered painting.

Though I had been painting since so long as I can remember, it was only in my mid-teens that I realised that I can’t live without painting.

Kalam: This is my latest work but also my first portrait. The time and patience this work took makes it to top my list. I can’t exactly tell the total time that it took but one eye took me around 5 hours. It’s made in simple 6B pencil The name of the painting is misleading. Any person would think that it’s Kalam for APJ Abdul Kalam but actually it’s kalam in Hindi which means pencil.

Kriti is one of the few artists who do not follow a specific process in their projects. Instead she prefers to work as per the situation and that is what we believe gives each of her projects a distinct touch from the rest. She does however, believe in making mistakes and considers mistakes to a part of the cycle of creating new artwork.

There is no process. Nothing is constant in two different projects. The only thing which is common to all my works is mistakes. I have been making mistakes in my artwork from the very start and it is these very mistakes which have led to 3 a.m. epiphanies and to the things which others believe have some deeper meaning.

When life gives you lemons: I usually name my paintings in relation to the process or time of making that particular piece and not in relation to the subject. But this piece is an exception to that and the reason for this is that this piece was one that I made within an hour just before my psych class, because of which I was late for the class. I was asked to become the subject of a psych experiment as punishment for coming late. Just when I was about to explain why I got late, the instructor said “Life is giving you lemons Miss Garg”.

She is currently working on a new portrait project which she says is ” Probably the first painting project of mine which has not been ‘demanded’ by relatives.” Aside from that she isn’t very sure about her future and where it leads.

However, there is one thing that I know for sure. Wherever my future leads me, community service/outreach and painting will absolutely be a part of it. I am still exploring my interests but artwork shall always be my field, even if the goals change.

One her stance towards a formal education in fine arts, Kriti believes that an individual should work on developing his or her own style first and only then go to an institution to learn fine arts. The presence of an instructor who may possess an artistic style different from the pupil might corrupt and irreversibly change the pupil’s own unique style just because it doesn’t fit in with what the instructor terms as art.

The Coloured Inception: Although I have never been able to complete any art course, I used to go to a teacher’s place just to sit there and work for about two months. This was about when I was in ninth grade and was the first artwork that I did in soft pastels. It was supposed to be very time consuming project and one that required a lot of patience but I completely lost it and went on and on with rubbing large pieces of chalk on paper. I was scolded, asked to be patient with my work and not waste resources but at the end of the day I was satisfied with my work.

She personally believes in creating whatever she wishes first and foremost, regardless of whether it has been derived from western culture, Indian culture or it is an entirely different and utterly original idea of her own. However, as an artist she does speak fondly of the important that Indian art from the past still plays in the artwork that we practise today.

The contribution of India’s culture and diversity to art is one thing that I am very proud of. I think with growing westernisation, European influence is becoming more and more visible in Indian art but simultaneously there has been a recent surge in the demand for art derived from our culture.

Over Three Rises: I remember my mum guiding me through my first canvas. 6th grade? yeah. Even at such a young age she felt that I’d able to do a piece successfully. When I sat down with colour pencils and paper for this one, after half hour she said “nahi ho payega”. I left it mid way, resumed it after 2 days and completed while she wasn’t home.
