Sachin Kamath, engineer, racecar designer, facebook star and realism artist. Dive into our interview with this rising star.

Sachin Kamath hails from a small tourist town in Karnataka called Dandeli. Since childhood, he’d always wished to be an aerospace engineer. He went on to do his B.Tech in mechanical engineering at NIT Surathkal, masters in aerospace engineering at NTU, Singapore and is now at TU Munich for his master thesis. He used to sketch in his school days and took part in some art competitions, however studies got in the way and he left it. He picked up art again after his bachelors, while working in Bangalore for a year. His parents and friends encouraged him a lot and he created a facebook page for his art. It received quite a lot of traction which motivated him to create more detailed artworks. He experimented, learnt new techniques himself and created a new piece every few months.

So here he is, a combination of what a hypothetical student who pursued both the art and science streams would look like. ( Incidentally, though none would admit it, such a student would also be every Indian parents delight, the proverbial “Sharma Ji ka ladka” 😛 )

Describe an average day in your life? What kind of creative tasks do you tackle daily?

Nothing out of the ordinary actually. Not a morning person, but I have to force myself to wake up at 8:30 am, make breakfast, hurry to my lab at the university. I like the morning journey on the train, my lab is like an hour away, so I read a book. Once in the lab I am mostly plugged in listening to some classic rock, daydreaming, taking my coffee breaks, doodling on my notebook and working on my thesis.  I reach back to my room by 8 or 9pm, watch some TV series or movies. Music is always playing in my room. I am not sure if thinking of alternate endings of a movie or TV series counts as being creative. Sometimes I plan my next artwork, my next day or think of travelling.

Describe your creative process, what is the entire process that goes behind creating a poster?

A concept. I generally think of a title and then build up on the concept. Once I have a clear idea of what I want to make, the rest is just making it look appealing to an observer.

Are there any funny or interesting stories related to your artwork?

I got a few comments and messages criticizing that I was using Photoshop. From then on I started placing a pencil beside with my drawings or I left a few rough pencil strokes at the bottom. Also, Peter Dinklage tweeted back to me after he saw his portrait drawing. Also apparently, a guy who had commissioned a drawing of Elon Musk, hand delivered it to Elon Musk’s office at Space X. Although, I have no hard proof that he has it, despite the constant tweets I spammed him with!

What influences you and inspires you while designing and creating?

The end result. I always have an image of how the artwork is going to look once I complete it, and the appeal of this end result is always inspiring me to finish the work.

What’s the best art project that you’ve seen recently?

Someone photographed different alcoholic drinks under a microscope. They do look like abstract paintings!

Have you ever experimented with your work and tried out a different style or medium of art?

I made a 3D drawing once named ‘The Goal’. It really turned out to be a simple yet effective concept to make 3D drawings. Apart from that I don’t really get time to experiment much. I’ve never used any other medium since I keep moving from one place to another and it’s really taxing to transport all my art stuff every time. Pencil drawing requires no setup, just a drawing book and a few pencils.

Mario Götze world cup winning goal by Sachin Kamath on BananaBandy
I got the idea for this drawing after watching Mario Götze score the winning goal for Germany at FIFA Worldcup 2014 finals. The entire image is a drawing. There is no need to sketch in perspective like most of the 3D drawings you see on internet. Just imagine a light source and drop a corresponding shadow. The wrinkled paper just exaggerates the effect and makes the drawing look more appealing. Here is a similar one of Saina Nehwal and AT-AT from Star Wars:

Can you tell us a little about your experience with racecar designing?

I am glad you asked this question. It’s quite surprising that you got you know that I was involved with NITK Racing. It was student racing team during my bachelor’s at NIT Surathkal. We were 20 team members who designed, manufactured and raced a car in Formula Student Hungary 2012. It is one of my best experiences in life! Watching the car that you designed and built from scratch, breathe air and come to life with a roar. You can see the video here:

That’s me sketching the car in the video and I was the team captain for that year. I worked on more of the technical aspects of the car such as the chassis design and aerodynamics. My artistic skills probably helped me in designing the body shell of the car, you can see the photos here:
