In The Spotlight: Shrey Purohit

Graphic Designer and typographer Shrey Purohit is under the BananaBandy Spotlight.

Shrey Purohit is a self-taught graphic designer and typographer from Mumbai. He is currently enrolled at ISDI Parsons Mumbai after teaching himself through books and youtube tutorials for the last two years. If juggling his work as a freelance graphic designer along with his studies wasn’t enough, Shrey is also currently working on setting up his own YouTube channel based on design and his experiences as a designer.

The process is extremely important. My process of artworks usually starts out with sketching, a lot of sketching. I like to show the process behind my artwork in great detail. I even write about what inspired the logo or poster.

In fact, Shrey depicts the entire process of his work in his projects from start to finish as you can see in the image below.

Pinterest and music are the major motivators for him. He keeps searching for inspiration from them. He also follows other artists, paper cut shadow boxes created by Hari and Deepti are one of his favorite projects. Shrey is also a big fan of Erik Spiekermann, the German typographer and designer. Like his idol, Shrey also see himself pursuing typography in the future.

I see myself studying and creating typefaces. I love typography and typeface design and I’m going to pursue that in the future, either in India or abroad.

Shrey recently experimented with his artwork and tried out a completely new type of artwork, Graphic Novels. His graphic novel, The Koliwada Experience was a completely new field for him.

Practice and keep practicing.

Then practice some more
