Sneha Inamdar is a Mumbai girl in and out. She’s been trained in the island city and has worked here too. Now, we get her take on her journey through her education to where she is now, who inspires her and how she unwinds.

Just to introduce yourself, if you aren’t freelancing, where are you working and what’s your current job title?

I currently work with Karigari Design studio as a Graphic Designer after being in Advertising for 2 years. I also freelance for design and illustration related projects.

Tell us about your journey from discovering your craft to acquiring the skill you have now.

My parents enrolled me for drawing class when I was, like, 6 years old and since then I have never been away from it. With time, I realised that it is way more than just a hobby for me and decided to pursue it as my career and studied Commercial Arts from Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai.

After dealing with various demands from clients and/or bosses, what’s that one experience that you learned the most from?

Never let them take you for granted and learn to say ‘No’.

If you learn to really sit with loneliness
And embrace it for the gift that it is…
An opportunity to get to know you.
Too learn how strong you really are,
To Depend on no one but you for your happiness…
You will realize that a little loneliness goes a long way
In creating a richer, deeper, more vibrant
And colourful you.”

-Mandy Hale

In the whole world, whose work do you aspire yours to be like? And what attracts you to appreciate what they do?

It’s difficult to name one as there are so many artists I admire but currently I love the work of Agathe Sorlet, an illustrator and animator based between Paris and London. I am in awe of her minimal illustrations and the way she animates them.

What do people not realise about your work/area of expertise?

I have been lucky to work with some amazing people who have always encouraged me. I don’t think anyone, till date, has doubted my abilities and my work always been applauded. If I receive criticism, it only helps me develop my work.

Never forget where you come from.
You are just a part of a much more bigger creation.
Dependant on mother nature for your needs.
Respect nature. Respect yourself.

Which project of yours are you particularly proud of? Could you tell us a little about it?

I am, in person, very inclined towards working for society and try to give my share however I can. When I participated in Cannes Young lions India 2015 I got to work on women’s safety and tried to give back to the society through my art.  I made a hand painted ‘How to behave with girls’ chart in the typical ‘Adarsh Balak’ type hand drawn style. And I was shortlisted in top 10 entries in India and got to have a conversation with all Ad gurus jury in just 6 months in advertising.  That was a proud moment for me indeed though it did not win. This project has a special place in my heart.

Brief: Women safety a norm not an aberration.
Idea: We are all familiar to ‘Adarsh Balak Charts’ as it was a big part of our childhood. It was looked upon when it came to inculcating habits in us

Can we have a piece of advice that helps you with your workflow?

I prefer doing a detailed study or research before I start working on anything.  That really helps in long run and also if you get stuck in process.

Before creation, one must absorb information.

So, what are you working on now?

Working on few packaging and brand identity related projects. Some new personal projects are also in process.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I see myself working independently in coming few years, collaborating with likeminded artists and doing more awesome stuff.

How do you unwind and refresh your creative juices?

Travelling is the best way of getting your creative forces on track. Keep travelling and keep exploring new places if you face a creative block.

You never know what new things you will make in a new space.

Have you ever tried out a completely different creative field? If yes, how did that turn out?

Yes, I keep trying lot of different things as this is also one more way for me to refresh my creative juices. I am a trained volunteer at Teach India and I teach spoken English to adults as I love teaching and it makes me happy.

Outer beauty pleases the eye.
Inner beauty captivates the heart.

If you had to start afresh in the industry today, would you choose a different path and if so, what would it be?

I wouldn’t want to start afresh as I really love what I do but if not this, I would definitely be a teacher, it runs in my genes.

Night us purer than day.
It is better for thinking and
Loving and dreaming.
At night every thing is more intense,
More true.
The echo of words that have been
Spoken during the day takes on a
New and Deeper Meaning

-Elie Wiesel

If you could claim that any one person’s work in India was yours, who would it be?

I would not like to claim anybody’s work no artist would like it I think.

Now that you’re getting/you have a firm foothold in the creative world, what would you like to say to ‘all the haters’?

I don’t think I have any haters; I am overwhelmed with all the love and appreciation I receive from friends and family. And if any I think we just keep doing what we are good at and that is the best response, success.

His love, limitless just like the sky.
But when they met at the horizon
Everything was just perfect.

A book everybody should read?

I have not been reading recently.  Can’t do justice to this question.

Your quick tip to everybody who does the same job as you?

Not a tip really, but I would suggest don’t get flown in just the office work and routine but make time for self projects and keep experimenting in new mediums and new forms. Get inspired. But don’t imitate and have your own style.
