In The Spotlight: Kesar Khinvasara

Kesar Khinvasara is under the BananaBandy Spotlight

Growing up, she always had an urge to create something using whatever materials other than the traditional. From using her mother’s cosmetics as paint to mixing flour with glue as a sculpting material, Kesar Khinvasara tried about many mediums. Some may have been more successful than others but it only spurred her curiosity to try out as many materials as possible. It was only through this constant exploration of mediums that she want what was truly her forte- black ink and paper.

It wasn’t until her second year of Junior college that she developed a keen interest in art along with philosophy. After which she pursued undergraduate studies in philosophy and continued developing her drawing and sketching skills on the side.

My source of inspiration is a basic element – a line. I am amazed by how a line is simple yet riddled with complexities.

She loves creating both the geometric designs with hard lines as well as the more organic ones with fluidity. Details are an integral part of her work. She constantly challenge herself to create more detailed and intricate patterns than her previous piece. As one can see in her work, she often leaves the black lines bare and untouched by colour to place greater emphasis on a labyrinth of tiny details which give each of her pieces their very own unique characteristics. It may come as a surprise considering the nature of her work, but Kesar Khinvasara prefers working freehand, as she believes it gives her finer control over her artwork!

This art work here is by far the most detailed design yet. Here I used a circle with a diameter of approximately 11 inches (before burning). The details you see here took me over a month to complete.

Her first break was when she was selected to exhibit her work alongside 13 other artists with EUSA (Edinburgh University Student Association). This also happened to be her first exhibition ever. The reception that she got for her work there was a confidence booster and inspired her to work even harder.

I find the study of crime very fascinating. It is definitely something I will incorporate in my drawings next.
