What are colouring books for adults?

Colouring books for adults are exactly the same as colouring books for children. Readers colour in illustrations which have been sketched and printed onto the book pages. While we traditionally associate colouring books with kids, the concept of intricate colouring books for adults has become a worldwide rage recently. Psychologists are recommending it to relieve stress and as a channel for creative outlet.

The most popular books are those which feature mandalas. Mandalas refer to sacred circles in Sanskrit, which have meditative qualities. Deeply spiritual, mandalas have a rich history and are even associated with healing. Several studies say that mandalas increase self-awareness, improve concentration and promote harmony. Colour therapists reckon that different colours have different qualities and therefore, effects on the human mind.

In 2015 Johanna Basford, Scottish illustrator and “ink evangelist” released The Secret Garden, and Enchanted Forest, colouring books with intricate patterns of birds, foliage and a treasure hunt, suddenly people realised that maybe they could be a part of this art as well. It sold 1.4 million copies and replaced a fiction novel as the number one best seller. Since then many more colouring books emerged and flew off the book shelves as well.

The factors that are driving the sales of adult colouring books are fun, nostalgia, relaxation and creativity. It’s a new way to relax one’s mind in their crazy schedules. People are always scouting for new things to do and are rather bored of usual suspects like movies and shopping, smart phones or tabs, etc.

The talented illustrator behind the book along with the chief overseer from Humming Whale
While colouring books are selling in millions in US and China, the market is growing at a good rate in India too. But since India is still a bit distant from the advantages of colouring, Humming Whale along with explorer and illustrator Jeenal Patel created ‘Around India in 40 doodles’ with the thought that besides colouring, the book also allows people to connect with their home towns and the cities they’ve travelled to. Hence, it is as much a collectable and travel wishlist book, as it is a colouring book.

We really like this book and believe it’s a great way to spend some time relaxing after a tiring day at work. Here’s an awesome video featuring a timelapse showing aamchi Mumbai getting painted in. What do you think about this? We’re looking forward to seeing some really creative designs as more and more people start buying such colour books. It’s a great gift to give your friends who love travelling as well so that they can start colouring in various sites and cities that they’ve visited.
